Penumbra has announced it has secured a CE mark for its Red 72 Silver Label and Red 72 Silver Label with Sendit technology products, which include “significant updates” to the company’s large-bore reperfusion catheter, Red 72. Penumbra details that Red 72 Silver Label was released in the USA in April 2025 and has therefore been available to US physicians over the past year.
“Red 72 Silver Label has significantly changed our practice as it pertains to treating patients with LVO [large vessel occlusion],” commented Donald Frei (Swedish Medical Center, Denver, USA). “The refined engineering is evident as the catheter tracks distally with ease and maintains lumen diameter during aspiration. The catheter construction is state of the art, allowing for faster and safer recanalisation of stroke patients with LVO. It is fantastic that our European counterparts now have access to the latest catheter technology.”
The Red 72 Silver Label devices are reperfusion catheters designed for acute ischaemic stroke. Penumbra notes that direct aspiration with Red 72 Silver Label can provide a fast, frontline option for this indication—while the COMPASS trial has shown aspiration catheters to be equal to stent retrievers regarding first-pass success.
Developed for speed and ease of navigation, the new Red 72 Silver Label features “meticulously blended transition zones” to better accommodate the natural anatomy of the brain. Adapted from the popular Red 43 and Red 62 catheters, the Red 72 Silver Label features Penumbra’s latest engineering enhancements. Additionally, the new Red 72 Silver Label with Sendit technology is designed to minimise ledge effect, simplify preparation, and ease delivery in LVO stroke, according to Penumbra.
“The introduction of Silver Label is indicative of Penumbra’s commitment to continuous innovation. We have more than 20 years of experience in developing state-of-the-art devices for minimally invasive interventions in the neurovasculature,” said Joan Kristensen, head of Penumbra Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). “We are now launching our most advanced catheter yet, designed for enhanced trackability while maintaining the hallmark lumen integrity of the Red catheter portfolio. This is very exciting, and we are thrilled to see how this latest generation of the Red 72 catheters can help physicians provide world-class stroke care to patients across Europe.”
Red 72 Silver Label has a 0.072-inch (1.83mm) lumen and a 0.085-inch (2.16mm) outer diameter, and it comes in a length of 132cm to reach target vessels. Red 72 Silver Label and Red 72 Silver Label with Sendit technology are available as separate catheters or prepackaged with Penumbra’s Thunderbolt—the first computer-assisted modulated aspiration device introduced for stroke care.
