Karonlinska University Hospital is to purchase the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon by Elekta. This intracranial stereotactic radiosurgery system is designed to offer precision radiosurgery to more patients with a wider variety of types and sizes of tumour.

Elekta’s founder, Lars Leksell, received his medical degree at Karolinska Institutet, before going on to develop the original Leksell Gamma Knife system during his time as professor of neurosurgery at the institute.

Gamma Knife Icon is the sixth generation of the company’s Leksell Gamma Knife system, a technology that has been in use worldwide and continually evolving since the 1980s. According to a press release from Elekta, the system includes stereotactic imaging, online Adaptive DoseControl, ultra-precise dose delivery and the availability of frameless treatments, and is capable of treating virtually any target in the brain, regardless of type, location or volume.
