Acandis has announced CE mark approval for its Acandis Aperio 1.9F Thrombectomy System, a next-generation self-expanding blood clot retrieval system used to treat patients with ischaemic strokes.

The system is designed to remove blood clots and restore blood flow in the brain vessels. It is offered as a set for use together with the Acandis 1.9F Microcatheter.

“Our goal is to provide a broad and effective line of products for treating patients with haemorrhagic and ischaemic strokes. The successful launch of this 1.9F low profile thrombectomy system moves us closer to reaching that goal” said Kirsi Schüßler, CEO of Acandis.

With sizes compatible for vessel diameters of 2–4mm, the device is suitable for all of the cerebral main vessels and those even more distal and rather difficult to reach, where a low profile delivery system is essential. In addition, the reduced profile design increases the lumen available for aspiration through the guiding catheter. Radiopaque transport wire markers and three low profile gold markers at the distal device end for visualisation support accurate positioning.

The Acandis Aperio 1.9F Thrombectomy System can be used up to three times based on the severity of the clot.

The company plans to launch the product in Germany and other CE mark countries during the fourth quarter of 2012. The launch of this product follows the recent introduction of the Acandis Acclino 1.9F stent system designed for use in the interventional neurovascular field as an adjunctive product in treating intracranial aneurysms with coils.
