Matthew Gounis (Worcester, USA) talks to BLearning at SNIS 2019 (22–25 July, Miami, USA) about the current state of ischaemic stroke therapy. Gounis notes that seven randomised controlled trials conducted in the last five years have shown that mechanical thrombectomy “is not only an incredibly powerful treatment” but also has “a treatment effect which is profound in medicine, not just in neurointerventional surgery”.
Gounis also looks at next-generation thrombectomy, explaining that the development of technology “took some time” but that the post-retriever generation which started in the late 2000s showed incredible efficacy of removing clots from the brain. The next-generation, Gounis notes, is “going to be even more powerful”, adding that is it now time “to turn our attention as a community more to the brain and what we can do more before the thrombectomy procedure”.
