Jan-Karl Burkhardt (Penn Medicine, Philadelphia, USA) sat down with NeuroNews at this year’s Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS) annual meeting (22–26 July, Colorado Springs, USA) to offer his perspectives on the recently introduced Hippo aspiration system and its Cheetah guiding companion (both Q’Apel Medical) for mechanical thrombectomy.

As one of the first US physicians to have used the Hippo-Cheetah combination in the treatment of large vessel occlusion (LVO) acute ischaemic strokes, Burkhardt is well-placed to convey first-hand experiences with the system. Here, he outlines the “evolution” it brings via its flexible and visible catheter tip, in addition to the device’s trackability and the simplicity enabled by having the option to complete a thrombectomy procedure using a single system.
