Osama O Zaidat (Toledo, USA) speaks to NeuroNews about mechanical thrombectomy and the COMPLETE registry dataset—recently published in the Stroke journal —which was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Penumbra System (Penumbra) in a real-world setting.

The system was shown to be “very effective across all users and in all hospital experiences”. Overall, the registry showed “excellent results in a real life and large sample size”, says Zaidat.

The published data has been “really well received by the field” he adds, noting that treatment algorithms may change as a result. “We have a hard time deciding what frontline treatment to use”, says Zaidat, adding that “Luckily we have many treatment options in our toolbox and the Penumbra System is one of them”.

Zaidat concludes by stressing the “significant global importance” of the use of mechanical thrombectomy when treating large vessel occlusion acute ischaemic stroke. “It has really changed the stigma around stroke by the ability to cure it, reverse the disability and provide patients with much better function outcomes at 90 days”.
