Two neurosurgeons from Tufts Medical Center in Boston, USA have been honoured with the 2022 Innovation Award at this year’s Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) annual meeting (16–19 November, Los Angeles, USA) for their work on an endovascular treatment option for patients with communicating hydrocephalus.

Adel Malek, chief of Neurovascular Surgery at Tufts Medical Center, and Carl Heilman, neurosurgeon-in-chief and chairman of Neurosurgery at Tufts Medical Center, are co-founders of Cerevasc—a company that has been developing and assessing the eShunt device.

This cerebral spinal fluid shunt is implanted via a minimally invasive procedure and is intended to improve on the current standard of care for communicating hydrocephalus by removing the need for invasive surgery.

“Drs Malek and Heilman have developed a disruptive innovation in the eShunt system that has the potential to meaningfully transform the way that patients with communicating hydrocephalus are treated,” said SVIN president Ameer Hassan (Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute, Harlingen, USA). “SVIN and the neuroendovascular community will benefit greatly from the work they are doing.”
